Although the IRS calls these payments "quarterly estimated taxes," their due dates don't actually align with traditional quarters or represent three months of tax payments.

Instead, they are equal quarterly shares of your estimated income tax liability paid at uneven intervals. The first payment is due 3.5 months into the year, the second at 5.5 months, the third at 8.5 months, and the fourth at 12.5 months after the year starts.
