On last Wednesday (2/19/25), a jury awarded my client and his wife $13.3 million as a result of his pain and suffering. Mr. Eric Wheeler, a crewmember (and Jones Act seaman) working on an offshore drill ship owned and operated by Noble Drilling, was hurt while working in the ship's Sack Room, lifting and moving heavy parts. He was working alone. He testified that he reported the injury to his immediate supervisor (who did not testify) shortly thereafter, but no record was made of the event or his reporting of it. He got OTC meds from the ship's medic for most of the next week, before being sent ashore to begin what became many months of medical care, culminating in surgery to put in an artificial disc at C3-4.

If you are injured due to no fault of your own, please give my office a call. I will take your case to trial if the insurance company does not offer full and just compensation. Please let me help you like I helped Mr. Wheeler and his beautiful Family. 713-338-2262

CENLA BLACK HISTORY: Attorney Louis Berry returned to his native Alexandria sometimes prior to 1950. Under the custom of the time, a new lawyer had to be introduced to the local bar association.

When other white attorneys turned down Berry and privately ridiculed him, Camille Gravel, a high-powered criminal defense lawyer with political connections in both Baton Rouge and Washington, called Berry and offered to introduce him to their legal colleagues. This action was considered politically courageous in the segregated system of the American South. Lawyer Berry filled the role as the only black lawyer in Alexandria.

The Alexandria Daily Town Talk attributed much of the improvement in living conditions in the black community to Berry's activism. The newspaper quoted Berry as having said: "Young people will be surprised to know the conditions under which blacks had to exist at the time, for they really had no rights that anybody was bound to respect."

Beginning on August 1, 2024 in the state of Louisiana, it will be illegal to offer or donate to persons on public roadways or rights-of-way and interstate highways. In essence, it will be a crime to give to those asking for anything of value who are standing on or near public roadways. What are your thoughts?

THE POLICE HAVE BEEN TRYING TO CONTACT ME. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

GOINS LAW: If the police are at your door knocking, do not answer it. If they call you, politely advise them that you need to speak to a lawyer first and then hang up. If they left a message, do not call back. Even if the police send you a formal letter requesting you come to the station for questioning, do not respond to letter either in kind or by going to the station at the requested time. You are not obligated to open the door, speak to them on the phone or respond to them by letter. Only if they have a search warrant are you required to let them in. If they have an arrest warrant, they may arrest you, but you do not have to talk to them. Demand to speak with a lawyer first.
