Today, December 12, we Catholics celebrate the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Empress of the Americas, Patroness of Latin America, Queen of Mexico; celebrating Marian apparitions to the peasant Juan Diego in December 1531. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the most-visited Catholic shrine in the world.
December 12, 2011, I was in trial in a felony court and was assigned a new case of an inmate in the same court that I was in trial. The Judge knew that I was a Spanish Speaker and my client did not speak English. During a break in trial, I met him in the holdover and told him that once trial was over and I received the police report, I would go visit him in jail. After almost 10 months of jail visits, family visits and investigating his case; it finally went to trial. On the first day of trial, I poked holes in the State's case that on cross examination, the complainant was unsure of her testimony or that a crime was committed or that it even happened in Harris County. I spoke with the prosecutor afterwards and she indicated that she could not proceed forward on the case, but needed approval from her chief before dismissing it. I got a call about 9 pm telling me that the case was to be dismissed first thing in the morning, the next day. I immediately went to the jail to tell my client who cried and asked me to pray with him; saying that The Virgen de Guadalupe had placed me in his path, rightfully on her Feast Day. We have remained friends, and he will call or text on my birthday, Christmas or Fathers Day. But, he always calls me on December 12th to say "thank you." He had been busy with work today, but a little after 9:00 pm he called me to say thank you. It makes the day even more special.
