Good morning everyone, as many of you may know Zantiago was born with a rare genetic mutation called 5Q14.13 chromosomal micro-deletion which is a fancy way of saying a piece of important genetic material for normal development is missing causing him delays. He is 10 years old but physically developmentally between a 4 and 6 month old. He is non-verbal but communicates thru other ways. Doctors can’t explain as to how or why this happened. When he first got his diagnosis there were only 13 families world wide. Life expectancy is unknown and we’ve had our fair share of scares the last one being last December 2013. We take everyday as a blessing and life it the best we can.

He enjoys anything and everything that gets him moving especially outdoors with family and friends. He likes playing tag, hide and seek, swimming, swinging, jamming to music all which he does with the help of others of course. He also enjoys riding his bike which he currently only gets to do at school. Zantiago was recently denied an adaptive bike by his insurance which isn’t uncommon (happens to many) because bikes are not deemed a medical necessity piece of equipment.

In my opinion, being outdoors, moving around in any which way that you can (with help or not), feeling the sun (vitamin D), and fresh air, enjoying the natural light, is all therapeutic. I think it does a lot for ones health both mentally and physically and if you add in family and friends to the mix, it provides an extra boost of mental wellness, again, in my opinion.

The Great Bike Giveaway is giving the opportunity to win an adaptive bike, this would allow him to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. There are so many amazing bike trails and paths our beautiful city has to offer not to mention the amazing groups such as Kidical Mass ABQ that puts on monthly events providing the opportunity and encouraging people of all ages to get outdoors together for a stroll (riding), socializing, learning about road safety, etc.
