New Mexico Black Lawyers Association

New Mexico Black Lawyers Association In 1982, four Black attorneys filled a void in the New Mexico legal community.

There was no entity in place that addressed the particular needs of African American attorneys in the state. The New Mexico Black Lawyers Association (“NMBLA”) was incorporated by charter members and incorporators: Tommy Jewell, retired Chief Children’s Court Judge; Hannah Best, who now heads the law firm of Best and Associates; Raymond Hamilton, retired Assistant United States Attorney; and Angel

a Jewell, retired District Court Judge, who notarized the documents of incorporation. Today, that group of four has now expanded to over 75 attorneys who hold dear to the original tenets of the organization.

Congratulations are in order! This year, the New Mexico Black Lawyers Association is awarding two Hobbs High School Seniors with our Raymond Hamilton Memorial Scholarship: A’Nivia Jackson and Bhret Clay. Both students maintain above a 3.0 GPA and wrote an essay on why Black History Month is important. Each will receive a $500 scholarship for their academic pursuits provided in part by the Rio Rancho Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Council. We commend them for their efforts!

The New Mexico Black Lawyers Association (NMBLA) expresses profound disappointment with the recent executive orders that undermine the progress we have fought for in terms of racial justice and equity. While we recognize the challenges facing our nation, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for a legal system that is fair, equitable, and inclusive.
Our organization is strong because we embrace and understand the importance of diverse voices, and we deeply appreciate our members who remain true to upholding the core tenets of NMBLA. The legal profession must reflect the rich diversity of the communities it serves, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the voices of Black attorneys, and those from other historically marginalized communities, are heard and valued.

Two NMBLA members are on the 2024 NM ballot: Court of Appeals Judge Shammara Henderson and Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court Judge Shonnetta Estrada. Thank you for highlighting the importance of a diverse bench! Repost from

⚖️🗳️🏛 In the 2024 General Election, 39 New Mexico judges are on the ballot, either for retention, election or re-election. New Mexico Black Voters Collaborative believes in advocating for diversity within our local courts and educating voters on the judicial retention and re-election process in our state.

As The Brennan Center for Justice notes, “Bringing a range of experiences and perspectives to bear allows judges to make better informed decisions and increases public confidence in their rulings. Unfortunately today, neither state nor federal courts reflect the diversity of the communities they are supposed to serve.”

Today, New Mexico Black Voters Collaborative’s Diversity on the Bench Spotlight calls attention to two examples of this local judicial diversity: the retention election of Judge Shammara Henderson, who is running for re-election for judge of the New Mexico Court of Appeals; and the first election for Judge Shonnetta Estrada—who was appointed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in November 2022—for Division XI judge of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court.

Via BallotPedia: “[In the state of New Mexico,] if no candidate files to run against the current incumbent, the next election will be a retention election. If more than one candidate files, then a partisan election will take place. New Mexico also requires at least 57% of voters to vote yes for a judge to win a retention election.” ⚖️🗳️🏛
