The sad thing is that this kind of fraud is rampant. I suspect this case is public and was prosecuted because of the nationality of the criminals, or maybe they got very sloppy. There are many more similar criminals in our midst and they should be prosecuted more.

Do not fall for email extortion scams! If you get an email that says someone has sensitive information about you, and asking for money in exchange for a promise not to send it out, it is probably false. Many young people are victims.

The FTC uses the information it gets from people who report scams to keep close watch on trends, so we can alert you to changes.
